Best Self Tan

It’s officially self-tan season ☀️

There’s a very specific moment every year when I’m like… okay, it’s time. The weather shifts, sleeves get shorter, plans get more spontaneous, and suddenly I want that “I just got back from somewhere warm” glow without actually baking in the sun. That’s when the hunt for the best self tanner becomes very real.

I’ve tried enough formulas to know the heartbreak of a tan that looks cute in the bathroom mirror and then turns into an orange situation in daylight 😩 I’ve also learned that the “best” self tanner isn’t just about being dark. It’s about looking natural, fading evenly, and not making hands, elbows, knees, and ankles look like they belong to a different person.

So this is my full, real-life routine: how I choose a self tanner, how I apply it, how I avoid streaks, and how I get that golden/olive vibe instead of orange. If you’re new to self tanning or you’ve been burned (emotionally) by patchy fades, this is for you.

What “best self tanner” actually means (to me)

When I say “best,” I’m not talking about one perfect product for everyone. I’m talking about what consistently gives the most flattering result across different skin tones and situations:

1) Natural-looking undertone (never orange)
A lot of self tanners lean warm. Warm can be pretty, but “warm” can also become “orange” fast depending on your skin’s undertone. The most foolproof self tans I’ve used are the ones that look more golden or olive once developed.

2) Even fade
A tan can look amazing on day 1 and still be a fail if it fades in blotches by day 3. I want a tan that fades gradually and doesn’t cling to dry patches.

3) Easy application
If it takes a full production to apply, I won’t keep up with it. I love formulas that spread smoothly and give enough “slip” so I’m not racing the clock.

4) Minimal smell + minimal transfer
All self tanners have some level of that classic self-tan scent (let’s be honest), but some are way more tolerable. Also, I’m picky about transfer. If I’m scared to sit on my own couch, it’s not the one.

5) Works for face too (or at least plays nicely with face products)
I don’t always use the same product on my face, but I like when a body tan doesn’t make my face look disconnected. A cohesive glow is the goal.

Undertones: the trick that changed everything

This is the biggest “aha” I’ve had: self tanners often come with different base tones. Some lean more green/olive, some lean more orange/warm. Once I realized that, it finally made sense why one formula could look perfect on a friend but pull weird on me.

Here’s the hack that leveled up my results: mixing undertones.

If a tan is too green/olive on its own, it can look a little dull or muddy on certain skin tones. If a tan is too warm/orange on its own, it can look… well, orange. But when I blend a more olive-leaning formula with a warmer one, I get this balanced, believable bronze that looks like my skin—just upgraded 🤎

I literally do it right on the mitt: one pump + one pump. Same depth level (like both in a deeper shade range) gives me the most even result, but you can absolutely adjust based on how tan you want to be.

My “before, later, after” self tan timeline

I always think it’s helpful to set expectations because self tan is not instant perfection (even when the bottle promises it).

Before: Skin is exfoliated, moisturized in strategic places, and totally dry before application. If I skip prep, the tan tells on me later.

Later (development phase): Depending on the formula, I either rinse quickly after a short processing time or sleep in it. During this phase, I avoid sweating, tight clothes, and anything that rubs.

After: The color deepens over the next several hours. This is when it starts looking like a real tan instead of a “product” sitting on top of skin.

Prep routine: the part that prevents streaks

If you only copy one part of my routine, copy this. Prep is what makes the difference between “smooth glow” and “why are my ankles doing that?”

Step 1: Exfoliate (but not right before, if you’re sensitive)
I like exfoliating the night before or earlier the same day. The goal is to remove flaky skin so the tan doesn’t grab onto dry patches. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and the tops of feet.

Step 2: Shave/wax timing
If I shave, I do it before tanning and give my skin a little time to calm down. Freshly shaved skin plus self tanner can sometimes look speckled if pores are irritated.

Step 3: Moisturize “problem zones” only
This is the cheat code for even color: I apply a light layer of moisturizer to hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, and feet. Not a thick layer—just enough to create a buffer so those areas don’t go too dark.

Step 4: Skin must be dry
No damp skin, no body oil, no slippery lotion everywhere. If the product can’t grip evenly, it’ll develop unevenly.

Application: how I get a smooth, non-orange tan

I’m very loyal to using a mitt. Always. Every time. Even if a product claims you don’t need one, I still prefer it because it keeps my palms from staining and helps blend edges.

Rule #1: Always use a mitt for best application
A mitt gives a more even layer and makes it easier to do long strokes without leaving fingerprints.

Rule #2: Circular motion = less streaking
I apply in circular motions on bigger areas (thighs, arms, stomach) and then long sweeps to smooth it out. Circular blending is what prevents those obvious lines.

Rule #3: Less product on joints
Elbows and knees get whatever is left on the mitt—never a fresh pump. Same with ankles and feet.

Rule #4: Blend up, not down
For wrists and ankles, I blend upward so there isn’t a harsh line where the tan “stops.”

Rule #5: Hands and feet are a separate mini-step
I do my body first, then I go back with the leftover product on the mitt and lightly tap/blend over hands and feet. If I go in heavy there, it’s over.

Express tans vs overnight tans (and when I use each)

Some days I want a tan but I don’t want to plan my whole life around it. That’s when I reach for an express formula—something that can sit for a short time, rinse, and then develop into color later.

Express tan vibes:
Perfect when I’m tanning last-minute, when I don’t want to sleep in product, or when I’m nervous about going too dark. I can control depth by how long I leave it on, then rinse and let it develop.

Overnight tan vibes:
Best when I want maximum depth and the most even development. I apply, put on loose dark pajamas, and let it do its thing while I sleep.

Either way, I treat the first few hours like a “no friction zone”: loose clothing, minimal sweating, and no tight socks or leggings that can rub lines into the tan.

Non-toxic / clean-leaning options: what I notice

I also keep a non-toxic, clean-ingredient self tanner in my rotation for weeks when my skin feels extra reactive or I just want something simpler. These are often lotion-style formulas that feel more like skincare and less like a “tanning event.”

What I love about lotion-style, clean-leaning tanners:

• Easy to apply because it spreads like body lotion. Some days I truly don’t want to deal with foam flying everywhere.
• Less aggressive smell (still there, but usually softer).
• Buildable color so I can do one layer for subtle glow or repeat for deeper bronze.
• Less transfer when the formula sets well.

What I don’t love (and how I work around it):
Some of these fade faster and can get a little splotchy as they wear off. When that happens, I don’t panic—I just do a gentle exfoliation and reapply a light layer to even everything out. The key is not letting dry patches build up underneath.

How I keep my tan looking good for days

A self tan that fades nicely is half product, half aftercare.

1) First shower: keep it gentle
After I rinse (or after the first full shower if I slept in it), I avoid harsh scrubbing. I let water run, use a gentle cleanser, and pat dry.

2) Moisturize daily
Dry skin makes tan fade faster and patchier. I moisturize every day, especially legs and arms.

3) Avoid exfoliating acids on the body (if you want the tan to last)
If I use strong exfoliants, I accept that my tan will fade quicker. When I want longevity, I keep body care simple and hydrating.

4) Touch-ups are normal
If my hands fade faster (they always do), I’ll do a tiny touch-up with leftover product on the mitt and blend like crazy. Light layers look more natural than trying to “fix” everything in one go.

Common self tanning problems (and the fixes I actually use)

Problem: “I always turn orange.”

Fix: Look for formulas that develop more golden/olive, and consider mixing undertones (a more olive-leaning tan + a warmer tan) to balance it. Also make sure you’re not over-applying on dry areas, because those spots can develop darker and look more orange.

Problem: “My tan looks patchy after a few days.”

Fix: Moisturize daily, avoid harsh scrubs, and do a gentle exfoliation before reapplying. Patchiness is usually dryness + uneven shedding, not necessarily the product “failing.”

Problem: “My hands look crazy.”

Fix: Hands should get the least product. Apply body first, then use only what’s left on the mitt for hands. Blend over knuckles lightly and wash palms right after.

Problem: “My tan transfers to clothes/sheets.”

Fix: Give it enough dry time before dressing, wear loose dark clothing during development, and avoid heavy layers of product. Some transfer can happen with certain formulas, but good drying time helps a lot.

My exact “perfect shade” routine (the one I repeat)

This is the routine I come back to when I want the most flattering, photo-friendly tan:

1) Prep: exfoliate + moisturize only joints/hands/feet + completely dry skin.
2) Mix undertones on the mitt: one pump + one pump for a balanced bronze.
3) Apply in circular motions: big areas first, then blend edges.
4) Go light on hands/feet: leftover product only, tap and blend.
5) Let it develop: express rinse or overnight, then hydrate daily.

The result is that “natural looking tan” that doesn’t scream self tanner, doesn’t go orange, and fades in a way that doesn’t ruin my week 😅

If you’re choosing your first self tanner…

If you’re new, I’d focus less on the darkest shade and more on the finish: even application, undertone, and fade. A medium-to-deep tan that fades nicely will always look better than an ultra-dark tan that cracks and clings to dry patches.
